On this trek in the Ladakh region you’ll experience high altitude desert contrasted with azure blue skies. The trekking is challenging more due to altitude than the steepness of climbs or descents. This remote high desert environment is quite unique.
If you’ve never trekked at this height before, you shouldn’t miss this opportunity. You’ll need to acclimatise with short walks from Leh for at least a day before setting off.
The area is only open to trekkers for a limited period each year, as in winter weather is extreme cold, harsh and windy weather blowing snow off the top peaks.
In summer, though, you’ll walk through remote and fragile mountain communities, with villagers working hard to tend plants, crops and trees in sheltered areas. We know local people in many of the villages we pass through and are often asked to stop for tea or lunch breaks in their houses ‘Ladakhi Style’.
Camp equipment is carried by yaks or highland mules and we usually camp close to Ladakhi settlements. This are is also rich in Buddhist culture, royal history and fascinating sites like Shanti Stupa and ancient monasteries.
