Cultural Experiences

Leaving the Himalayas, the Students visited ‘The Golden City’ of Jaisalmeer which is a World Heritage Site in the middle of the Thar Desert. This walled city is packed with amazing historical monuments and there was a chance to visit the huge sandstone fort dating from 1156.

The Students took the chance to experience travelling by train, including to Jodphur, where they walked around the ‘Blue City’ and visited Mehrangarh Fort.

The final stop was in Jaipur and a chance to see how the Indian people live, to appreciate first hand the varied culture and to walk around the sights of this the capital city of the province of Rasjasthan.

Cheltenham Ladies College put together a 3 week Expedition that included Trekking, a Community Project as well as visits to cultural sites in Northern India.

Expedition Planning

Following a School Talk given to morning assembly, Students developed a plan of what they wanted to achieve on their expedition. In 2011 Puran Bhardwaj worked with Teachers to finalise the details, through a UK company wilderness Expertise.

Bhaba Valley Trek

One of the most beautiful treks in the Himalayas. Once acclimatised, the Students were guided upwards through peaceful river valleys surrounded by snowy peaks. Students walked through Himalayan villages and could witness the sustainable lifestyles of the local communities. The trek is ‘moderate difficulty’ but there was a real sense of achievement on reaching the evening camps set up by our sherpas. After a good meal prepared by our cooks, the Students were able to enjoy time around the camp fire, chat, have fun and watch the

Neen Middle School Community Project

Neen is a small village at about 2,400 metres. With the help of Expedition Leaders, Cheltenham Ladies’ Students were in touch with this school before they left the UK to plan the Project.

The Students and Teachers cleaned and painted a computer room and with help from local tradesmen built desks and installed some computers. Some students taught local children and the School committed to fund a computer teacher for 2 years.

All this led to the school being upgraded to a Secondary High School, saving local children from walking several hours to the next nearest equivalent.
